OUR STORY

Sharing S.E.E.D.s started as a dream of mine in 2010. That was the year I lived in three different states (by choice) and created memories that will last a lifetime. I was born and raised in Miami, FL, also known as "The Concrete Jungle," and moved to Memphis, TN, in 2010. I fell in love with all the beautiful things the country had to offer, especially having all four seasons of the year.

I had the opportunity to meet different families and interact with children of all ages. I discovered that many children did not have the opportunity to explore Memphis the way I had. Simple experiences like going to the Memphis zoo (ranked 8th in the nation), exploring Shelby Farms (one of the largest urban parks in the nation), and even learning about the art in the Brooks Museum (the oldest and largest art museum in Tennessee). It disheartens me to know children were having these missed moments in their young lives.

My brother and I were blessed to have adventurous parents that made sure we were exposed to the world. We traveled every summer (domestically and internationally), were a part of various summer camps (often being the only minority), and participated in many community programs and organizations for children.

It was not shocking that I kept having a reoccurring dream of providing the same support and adventure to children around me. I knew it was time to create a plan and put my vision into action.

Dr. Lilian Katz is the inspiration for our approach, the project approach. Dr. Katz is a renowned emerita professor of Early Childhood Education and one of the pioneers of the project approach. She believes that children should interact with adults, materials, and their surroundings in many ways that will make sense of their own experiences.

The project approach exposes Sharing S.E.E.D.s students (S.S.S.) to experiences and in-depth investigations of different topics of interest. The projects we study provide many additional benefits in children's development and support their intellectual and academic development. After the study, the S.S.S. are taken on an exploration.

At Sharing S.E.E.D.s, we care about what we do. We hope to develop strong children, families, and communities across the city through academic readiness, character development, and social enrichment activities. Our goal is for Sharing S.E.E.D.s to be the bridge for EVERY child to learn through experiences and exposure. Students. Experiences. Exposure. Development. Four words plus one vision will create champions!

"Provide lots of opportunities for children's natural curiosity to manifest itself. With very young children, our role is one of supporter and guide." -Lilian Katz.
